About Color Formats
What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?
They describe the same color in different coordinate systems. HEX and RGB are the same thing — red, green and blue channels from 0–255 (HEX is just those numbers in base 16). HSL restates the color as hue (0–360°), saturation and lightness, which is far easier to reason about when you need "the same blue, but darker".
Why does my HEX turn into a different RGB value?
If you paste a three-digit shorthand like #09d, it expands to #0099dd. If you paste an eight-digit value, the last two characters are alpha and are ignored here.
How is HSL calculated from RGB?
Lightness is the average of the highest and lowest channel. Saturation describes how far the channels spread apart. Hue is derived from which channel dominates — red at 0°, green at 120°, blue at 240°. Rounding means converting RGB → HSL → RGB can shift a channel by one point.
Can I paste a named color like "tomato"?
Yes, as long as your browser recognises the name. The tool asks the browser to compute the color, then reads the resulting RGB channels back.
Is anything uploaded?
No. All conversion happens in your browser.
